Tea Estate Bungalows in Sri Lanka: A Romantic Honeymoon in the Hills

19th August 2026

Sri Lanka’s tea estate bungalows offer a very different kind of honeymoon from the island’s better-known coastal escapes. Here, romance is less about beaches and sunsets and more about misty mornings, cool evenings, long verandahs and afternoons spent over a pot of tea.

Set among the tea-covered hills above Pussellawa, The Lavender House is a useful example of this slower style of hill-country stay: a former tea estate bungalow where the landscape and the rhythm of the estate remain central to the experience.

For couples who want a honeymoon built around quiet time together, long breakfasts, an evening walk through the tea as the light fades, a private dinner on the verandah, that shift in pace tends to matter more than any single attraction. It’s a different kind of memory to come home with: not a list of things done, but a stretch of days that all felt a little slower than usual.

A Landscape Built Around Tea

The Lavender House sits within the historic Hellbodde tea estate, one of the oldest tea-growing estates in the hill country. Tea was reportedly first planted here in 1854 by Maurice Worms, back when the estate was known as Condagalla, alongside the neighbouring Rothschild estate, a history that still shapes the place today, right down to the tea in the afternoon pot, still grown and processed on the same ground.

The bungalow keeps its English-style character rather than dressing itself up as something newer. Rooms tend to be generously proportioned rather than modern and compact, built for people who lived on an estate rather than passed through it, with wide verandahs designed for sitting and watching the hills rather than admiring a view for five minutes before moving on. Many of Sri Lanka’s tea estate bungalows carry a similar story, land first planted for tea, then later reimagined as somewhere to stay, and The Lavender House is very much one of them.

Five Rooms, Named for the Garden

The Lavender House keeps to five rooms: Plum, Lilac, Violet, Magenta, and the Lavender Suite, each named for a shade found somewhere in the garden outside. Couples can book a single room for a quieter, more private stay, or take the whole bungalow as a group, the same choice that’s shaped stays here for as long as the estate has been welcoming guests.

High Tea, and the Ritual of Slowing Down

High tea here isn’t dressed up for visitors, it’s simply how the afternoon is spent. It often starts with a walk through the surrounding tea estate, ending back at the bungalow for the tea itself: scones, small sandwiches, and a proper pot brewed from leaves grown just outside, taken slowly, with 360-degree views of Pussellawa opening up around you. For a honeymoon, it doubles as one of the easiest romantic rituals to fall into without any effort, no reservation to chase, no occasion to manufacture. Evenings can follow with something more hands-on: hot stone cooking for two, cooked right at the table.

A Honeymoon at a Tea Estate Bungalow in Sri Lanka

A stay at The Lavender House moves at the pace the setting suggests. Days tend to include some combination of:

  • A walk through the tea estate itself, mist lifting as the morning goes on
  • Time by the pool, cooler than a coastal pool but rarely too cold to enjoy
  • A private or barbecue dinner arranged away from the main dining area
  • High tea in the afternoon, most days without having to ask for it
  • A day trip out to one of the nearby waterfalls or tea factories

For couples looking at honeymoon packages around Nuwara Eliya, ours covers most of what makes a stay here feel like a honeymoon rather than just a holiday: a welcome bouquet and drinks, a candlelit dinner by the pool, breakfast in bed or a floating breakfast, high tea out in the tea estate itself, a spa discount, and, on two-night stays, a guided walk through the tea fields.

Mist, Mountains, and a Different Kind of Quiet

Part of what makes this stretch of the island feel romantic has nothing to do with the property itself. It’s the setting: the temperature that actually requires a light jumper in the evening, the mist that rolls in most mornings and burns off by mid-morning, and mountain views that change character depending on the hour and the cloud cover. Coastal honeymoons tend to be about the water. This one is about the air, and about a climate that makes slowing down feel natural rather than forced.

Beyond the Garden

The wider tea country offers a handful of easy excursions without asking couples to give up much of the day:

  • Ramboda Falls – one of the more dramatic waterfalls in the area, an easy stop on the way to or from Nuwara Eliya
  • Damro Labookellie Tea Centre and Blue Field Tea Factory – both offer a look at how the tea in the afternoon pot actually gets made
  • Kothmale Reservoir – a quieter spot for a slow afternoon by the water
  • Devon Falls and St Clair’s Falls – two more waterfalls worth the short detour
  • Peacock Hill, about one hour away – a guided hike with someone on hand to point out what’s moving through the forest

When to Go

Peak season runs from December to March, and again in August. Accommodation can be particularly busy around festive periods, school holidays and long weekends too, so it’s worth booking a little ahead of time either way. Outside the peak months, the tea country is quieter still and noticeably wetter, which some couples prefer for the mist alone, provided rain doesn’t bother the itinerary.

Planning a Tea Country Honeymoon

Much of the planning can be handled before you arrive. The concierge team can help arrange dining, high tea and other experiences, leaving couples with little more to decide than how much of the day they want to spend enjoying the view.
